Greensand Country Launch New ‘Dial-a-Ride’ Community Transport Service

January 25, 2019

An official launch of the Greensand Country ‘dial-a-ride’ community transport service was hosted by Central Bedfordshire Council. The new service will now provide minibuses to 50 different parishes in the mid-east of the county.

“This door-to-door service enables those who use conventional public transport or get about themselves to go shopping, visit friends and attend doctor appointments.”

Fully Accessible Service

The Greensand Country bus service contract began running in October 2018 and has provided over 1,500 door-to-door journeys for residents. Residents can book the valuable service and is fully accessible for the elderly or disable people who find it difficult to use traditional public transport services. The service operates Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 5pm.

Executive Member for Community Services, Councillor Ian Dalgarno, said:  “We know how important public transport is, especially in rural areas, where it’s not always viable to run a regular bus service.

“This door-to-door service enables those who use conventional public transport or get about themselves to go shopping, visit friends and attend doctor appointments. It’s one of those services people don’t often know about, and we’re keen for many more people to use and benefit from this service.”

Charity Supports Community

Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity, a local charity that offers a range of community transport services, provides the wheelchair accessible minibuses for the service.

Chief Executive of Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity, Tracey Cowan, speaking at the official launch, said:  “We’re very pleased and excited to welcome our new Greensand Country bus service which will help us continue to connect our communities across Bedfordshire. It joins several other initiatives within the charity, providing excellent services to enhance and support our most isolated residents.”

The ‘dial-a-ride’ service is available on a membership basis. Normally costing £20 each year, membership is reduced on a special launch offer for £10 until March 31st. Fares are set for residents at affordable prices for both short and longer journeys.
