Vehicle Leasing for Fleet Operators on the Rise

February 6, 2020

Demand for hire and lease options on commercial vehicles continues to rise according to a report published by the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA). Uncertainty over Brexit, air quality legislation and better value leasing options have caused a shift in the market and many companies would rather rent a vehicle than purchase outright.

The BVRLA’s 2020 Industry Outlook: Commercial Vehicles report found that businesses are looking for more flexibility when it comes to renewing their fleet and many have switched to short term solutions over cash purchases and hire purchase agreements. Ten years ago, over 70% of the market would have owned their fleet but that has dramatically decreased. Fleet operators, particularly within SMEs, are now switching to short term solutions in a bid to reduce risk.

Flexible Vehicle Leasing

BVRLA chief executive Gerry Keaney commented: “Commercial vehicles are the lifeblood of the UK economy which means operators are looking for flexible and adaptable support with their fleets. Many truck and van operators are delaying re-fleeting decisions, largely due to a lack of confidence in their ability to forecast as a result of continuing uncertainties.

“Cost remains a major concern for operators, as knowing what a vehicle will cost post-Brexit is still an unknown. When you combine this with the confusing array of local air quality initiatives, the landscape becomes even more uncertain.”
